REVIEW: Origins Mega-Bright Skin Tone Correcting Serum

Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins® Mega-Bright Skin Tone Correcting Serum ($69.00/30ml)

Back in mid-March I purchased a bottle of skin-tone correcting serum by Origins. I went into Sephora looking for a product to help me combat acne scarring that exists on my chin. I was originally looking at Clinique's dark spot corrector, but the Sales Associate said that this Mega-Bright serum would be more effective for acne scars, so I bought it.
Apparently, 92% of participants in a research study showed a "dramatic" improvement in evenness of skin tone in just four weeks time while using Mega-Bright, so I hoped I'd be a part of that majority. Mega-Bright is advertised to visibly reduce dark spots and discolorations while preventing the appearance of new dark spots simultaneously. It is said to be effective for UV damage, acne scarring, and age spots. After four weeks of continuous usage, Origins states that your skin should be clear, bright and luminous! How great does this sound to you? I like Origins as a brand- they focus on using natural ingredients in their products. I trust Origins to make good quality and effective products. That is why I paid $70 + tax for this 30ml bottle of serum.
Unfortunately, this product has not lived up to its many claims for me. It pains me to write this review, because I really, really wanted this product to work for me. I've been using it in conjunction with retin-A on my chin area for 2 months now, and I think the retin-A is doing a better job of lessening discolouration because I have been using Mega-Bright solely on my cheeks (where I also have acne scarring) and the dark spots are not budging.
The pros to this product? It smells amazing. It is a light orange scent. It is very silky in texture and almost feels like a primer when applied to my skin. It soaks in quickly and leaves behind no residue. It is a pretty pearly colour. The cons? It doesn't do what I bought it to do- lessen dark marks! Overall, I would say this was a big waste of $70 bucks. I would not re-purchase nor recommend this product to any of you, but I will finish the bottle because I paid for it and it isn't doing any harm to my skin.

Mega-Bright has a pearly appearance
Help a sister out, what is your best tried and true dark spot corrector? I don't want to waste another $70.00 on something that isn't effective!

P.S. did you all see the new MAC Hey Sailor collection that was just released? Anyone going to make a purchase? I love the nautical theme!

  1. I just bought the Clinique brown spot corrector.. I just started using it and the product said to give it 4 weeks for results! I can let you know what I think about it if you want.. just so you don't spend money on another product! :)

  2. Such a shame this didn't work for you, I was looking at this today but glad I didn't pick it up as it is a lot of money. I have tried the Clinique one before, I used it for 5-6months and didn't notice a difference at all. xx

    1. hrm it seems like none of these popular dark spot correctors work, huh? retin-A is working on my chin (slowly) but I don't want to apply it everywhere because it is really drying.

  3. I'm sorry it didn't work out that is a lot of money for a product that doesn't do the job. I haven't tried it but I have heard the Clinque one is the best on the market right now however it is around the same price point so that's a bummer.

    1. yes, it was a few dollars cheaper than the Origins. I wonder if the SA was just talking out of her butt and didn't actually know what she was talking about when she said Origins was better for acne scarring? at least it smells good! haha.

  4. Oh geez...$70...I would be pissed off if it didn't work! I wish I had a suggestion for you. Would Sephora take it back? They're usually really good about returns (up to 90 days I think?)

    2. I just turned it off again. IDK how it got switched back. thanks for letting me know, Jayne.

    3. ps I hate returning things that I've used, even if I don't like them. Unless I just absolutely hate it, I will keep it. I'd feel wrong returning it since I've used it for 2 months already!

    4. Awww, I hear ya. I've only returned one thing ever at Sephora and that was because the mascara I bought was making my eyes burn. I thought that was a pretty good reason!

  5. 70$?!?!?! That is so expensive! I'm sorry that it didn't work - because 70$ is way too much for a nice smelling cream! I have never tried any dark spot correctors - but if I end up using one and find it works I will be sure to let you know :)

    1. it seems like all dark spot correctors are around the same price- and it IS expensive but a little goes a long way and if it WORKS it'd be worth the price.

  6. I would definitely return this! Sephora has a great return policy. Even though you've used this for a long time, I think it's acceptable to return it because this is a product that requires a lot of time to see results. $70 isn't a small investment, I'd say take it back and explain your story :)
Sorry this didn't work out for you! :(

    1. urgh I don't think I will return it. maybe I'll give it to someone else and hope it works better for them- it has to work for SOMEONE or else how would they be selling it right? haha.

  7. Oh no! $70 is so much! I'm sorry. One of the blogs that I read just did a feature on the clinique a few days ago and said she liked it. Maybe you will have better luck with it.

    1. thank you for checking out my blog! I am hopping over to yours now :) I've heard mixed reviews of the clinique one, perhaps I'll just stick with retin-A since it actually WORKS.

  8. wow, it's expensive. I have read good reviews about this but after reading yours, don' think I want to pay $70 to gamble. The Kiehl's dark spot correctoris not as expensive, think it's $55. Wonder if Kiehl's will give out samples so you can try it out before buying the whole bottle.

    1. I've tried the Kiehl's dark spot corrector (unless their reformulated and renamed) a few years ago and I found that it did nothing. :(

    2. yes I really had high hopes, I read lots of reviews on Sephora.com before buying it and it seems like 50% of people liked it, so it must work for some people but it didn't work for me!

  9. Aww that makes me sad you put out all the money and it didn't work! I have been looking for a good skin tone correcting product forever so if you do ever find one let me know :) P.s. I have seen the new MAC collection.. I am loving the packaging of the lipsticks.. may have convinced me to pick up one.. or two.. or three!

    1. I really wanted MAC's pretty bronzing highlighter from the 'dimension' collection that is no longer available (superb was the name of it). I kept hoping they'd bring it back but it looks like they're not.

  10. Thanks for following! I think because of the type of acne I was having and having so much of it, on my cheeks and back, also I was getting a new pustule everyday (no joke). So that was a sign, he put me on minocycline previously, almost two years ago and cleared everything up. This time he increased the dosage from 50mg to 100mg.

Did you go to Origins on Earth Day? Don't know if its the same in Canada, but they would give you a face lotion for trading in any old skincare product for recycle. I didn't take advantage of it.

Oh! I've been using retin-a as well. :D

    1. I also used minocycline! but as soon as I went off of it, all my acne came back. I wasn't impressed because it was also VERY expensive (I didn't have drug coverage at the time).
I didn't make it to Sephora on earth day! I was out of town. It made me sad to miss out on such a wicked deal!!

  11. Oh man!! $70 for something that just smells nice?? That would piss me off. I'm *always* checking out products that are supposed to help even out skin tone and such..but I'm always afraid to spend money on it even if it's cheap. If I do purchase something and find it works great, I'll let you know!

As for the new nautical MAC I read on a blog that gloss is really sticky and perhaps it's a product to not spend the $$ on!

  12. Hate it when that happens! I havent had dark spots but I have heard good things about a brand Fair&Lovely not sure if its available internationally but its not that expensive!

  13. I tried ole henriksen pure ferfection cream..and I must say I was impressed as it lightened my scar a lot..used it in conjunction with keilhs vit c

  14. I wonder if it is the type of acne scarring. I use the mega bright serum morning and night and it didn't even take the whole month to start working. In less than a week the scarring on my cheeks lessened a lot. Maybe it works differently for everyone? I know specifically for me the Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation definitely did not work, nor did the Garnier dark spot remover

  15. I have been using the serum for the past eight months and it really worked wonders on my skin. I'm so sorry to hear it didn't work for you. I also $50 for mine. Seventy dollars sounds insane!

When I was younger I used Neutrogena Visibly Even skin care line and that also worked great. The only reason I stopped was because most of the drug stores stopped carrying it. The only place I know that carries it now is drugstore.com

  16. Have you tried Caudalie's Vine perfect Radiance Serum? I've had great results with it! Or skincare from l'occitane? Both brands are very pricey but I find that the Caudalie works for me. All skincare products should be used for at least 3 months. Get samples! They're pretty generous if you tell them you want to try it for more than one free applications
