REVIEW: Urban Decay De-Slick Oil-Control Makeup Setting Spray

Is there anything worse than catching a glimpse of yourself mid-day and seeing shine shine shine? This is something I've dealt with for my entire adult life! My makeup looks gorgeous when I leave my house, and by the time I see myself again in a mirror, I am glistening- but not in a good way. I have naturally oily skin in my t-zone, and my pressed powder does not stay matte. I've tried expensive pressed powders, mattifying pressed powders, cheap pressed powders- nothing works.
I've tried using primer to keep the shine away, and although it helps, it isn't a miracle worker. Hence my purchase of Urban Decay's De-Slick setting spray ($35.00/118ml). I find the price to be a little off-putting- thirty five bucks for a facial spray? I decided to just buy it and try it out anyway- if I really hated it, Sephora would accept the return and let me exchange it for something else. Luckily, that won't be necessary. It was a great find!

To me, the product almost smells like hair spray. You don't notice the scent once it is on your skin though. To use it, you simply shake it up, and mist it over your entire face with your eyes closed, while holding the bottle 8 inches from your face. The bottle suggests you mist your face 2-4 times- once or twice before applying your foundation, and one to two more times after your makeup is completely finished. De-Slick is formulated to keep your makeup in place, and leave your skin looking matte all day, without clogging pores or causing acne breakouts. It absorbs excess sebum, and is supposed to control shine for up to 16 hours. De-Slick is free of parabens, sulfates, dyes, petrochemicals and phthalates: another win!
I have never been a huge fan of Urban Decay- this is mainly because I do not like their packaging designs. If I am buying high-end products, I like the packaging to reflect that. Urban Decay packaging has always looked kind of tacky to me- this product is no exception. I find the packaging to look very cheap. However, the product WORKS! And so I will deal with the lack of packaging prettiness, I suppose.
I put this product on after I've applied my makeup. I do not wear foundation, so I don't apply it to my bare skin. However, I might play around with that and see if it works even better! I have applied my makeup in the mid-morning, and by 10pm my shine is coming through on my nose and chin area, but looking great every where else! Throughout the day, I have noticed that my face looks much less greasy, and touch ups aren't as necessary. I find this product to be effective, although it doesn't live up to the 16 hour claim. I still use primer for any eye makeup I might be wearing, but I will not use primer anywhere else on my face. The product will be a little wet on your skin when you spray it, but it absorbs and dries pretty quickly.
Overall, this product is amazing! I would recommend it to anyone who has greasy skin- it will keep you looking fresh through the work day. If you do your face for an evening out dancing, I can promise you that you'll still look fly by the nights end! If you don't suffer from greasy skin, Urban Decay makes two other setting sprays, All-Nighter for normal skin types and Dew Me for dry skin types.
Do you have any other brands of makeup setting sprays that you enjoy? Tell me about them!

  1. I have one from Skindinavia and I love it :) I think the UD one is made by Skindinavia, so they might be the same formula!

    1. yes, it is made by Skindinavia ! Does that mean that it is the exact same formula? why would they sell it under Urban Decays brand, I wonder?

    2. I checked out Skindinavia's website- their packaging is much nicer! haha.

    3. I'm thinking maybe because UD is a more well-known brand? I really don't know lol
Ya I like the packaging - very simple!

    1. Glad to hear you like it too! I think the only difference between them is that all-nighter is for normal skin, whereas de-slick is for oily skin. I was talking with the SA at Sephora to decide which one was best for me, and she told me that if I have shine control issues de-slick would be the better choice.

  3. Ooh - I'd really consider trying this product (since I also have oily skin), but the price is a bit of a deterrent for me.

    1. they sometimes have the travel sized versions at Sephora- that way you can try it without buying the full-sized version. Check your local one and see if they have the travel-sized in stock!

  4. I have mini versions of the all-nighter... though looks like I really should have the De-Slick one since I have horrible oily skin. Great review (and I totally agree about the tacky packaging)

    1. grab a travel sized De-slick next time you need a new bottle- it'll probably work better for you :)
YES- who approves the packaging designs? seriously? haha.

  5. I have never tried a setting spray, but I don't usually get too oily throughout the day. Blotting papers are my go to thing, but I wonder what would happen if I picked up the one for dry skin? I am also scared of spraying myself in the face with anything...maybe that's why I haven't tried a setting spray! I'm happy you found something that worked though!

    1. haha it is a little odd to spray yourself in the face, it is true!! It takes some getting used to.

  6. I've never tried a setting spray, but my friend has used the UD Night one and told me it worked well. This would probably be more what I would go for but the $35 does make me hesitant to try. AND YES I COMPLETELY AGREE I tend to stay away from UD as well because of their packaging!

    1. I am glad I'm not the only one who finds UD packaging to be tacky. They are fairly expensive so you'd think they'd put more thought into their packaging designs! The palettes usually look nice, but that's about it.

  8. Thank you so much for the review! This is something that I have wanted to try for such a long time! I have the mini version of the All Nighter spray, but I don't really feel like it does anything at all. Looks like this product may not be for me after all...as my problem isn't so much with oiliness, but more with makeup/foundation staying power.

    1. All Nighter didn't work for you? that is a shame! I wonder if different peoples body chemistry has different results with it. Did you apply it before and after applying your makeup?

  9. Funny you mention it smells like hairspray I had a mua blogger tell me it is pretty much like hairspray for you face to hold your makeup in place! I guess it really does work that way too good to know!

    1. haha yes but it doesn't FEEL like hairspray! which is an important point to make- once it absorbs into your skin, you cannot tell it is there at all :)

  12. I have the all nighter Urban Decay Spray and I love it but I think my face was getting used to it, so it is not working like it did in the past. You should really try Model in a Bottle! It is cheaper and I think it works better! (:

  14. I saw this yesterday at Sephora and I was just wondering if it works. You read my mind!! Glad to hear that even though it's pricey, it works. I will give it a try next time I go there. I have been using Tarte Amazonian clay powder and have been quite impressed by it. Truly keep my foundation/powder stay put all day and my face doesn't need blotting throughout the day.

  17. Awesome review! I've been wondering about this product for the longest time! I have oily skin too that goes crazy come Summer and no powders that I have tried keep me matte or even somewhat matte. I agree with you on the price...it's a little steep but I think I may have to go for it and give it a try! This was very helpful...thanks! :)
