GLOSSYBOX - June 2012

Well, it is finally time for my "June" Glossybox review! I know, it is July! If you're wondering why my June Glossybox review is going up so late, I will tell you that it is because my Glossybox just made it to my doorstep today! 3 days into July, and I finally got my "June" Glossybox.
Glossybox is known to ship very late into the month. Subscribers never know when they'll get their boxes because Glossybox is very elusive and never tells us what is going on with their shipping dates. I got my tracking number from Canada Post on June 26th, with a delivery date of June 28th. However, Glossybox did not actually give my box to Canada Post on June 26th, which I found out when I called CP to find out why my package wasn't delivered on June 28th. I saw on the Facebook page that Glossybox was letting Canada Post take the heat for why the boxes weren't being delivered before the end of the month, but it was really their fault- they gave the shipping notices to Canada Post but didn't actually give the beauty boxes to Canada Post until a couple days later. I am not impressed with this. It seems that every month, they ship later and later and later, without any apparent reason.
For those of you who are new to beauty boxes, Glossybox is one of Canada's subscription beauty boxes. Alongside Glymm, Julep, Luxe and Topbox, Glossybox charges a monthly fee and sends out packages of deluxe beauty samples, such as lotions, makeup, nail care or skin care items right to your door step. Glossybox comes in a gorgeous, sturdy pale pink box that is completely re-usable for giving gifts or personal storage. Glossybox charges $15.00/month for their service- more than Glymm and Topbox. However, they promise to send "5 luxury product samples from high-end brands " in every box.

June 2012 Glossybox
In my June Glossybox I received:
Biore Combination Skin Balancing Cleanser (200ml/full size) (retails for $9.99)
Neutrogena ultra sheer sunscreen SPF 55 (14 ml) (full size retails for $15.99/88ml)
Wella Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Hairspray (150ml/full size) (retails for $16.99)
Olay Regenerist Wrinkle Revolution Complex (7 ml) (full size retails for $30.99/50ml)
CoverGirl Flip Stick in Minx (3.8g/full size) (retails for $12.50)
Gillette Venus Razor (full size/retails for $13.50)
Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strip (1 strip) (full size 8 pack retails for $9.99)

CoverGirl Flipstick in "minx"

This box came with a decent variety of products- makeup, hair care, and skincare items. I am happy with that. However, everything but the Wella hair care product is a drugstore item. Glossybox says on their website that they deliver "luxury product samples from high-end brands" and that is just not the case with this box. Covergirl, Biore, Neutrogena? These are all affordable drug store branded items. I signed up for Glossybox knowing I was paying MORE for the service than Glymm or Topbox charges simply due to their promise of sending out luxury and premium branded products. I am sad that they're not keeping their promise to subscribers. I have also read on the Facebook page that three of the items we were sent this month had been given out for free as part of the P+G brand sampler this month? I didn't get one, but for those who did, I could see a major annoyance.
The Biore Combination Skin Balancing Cleanser is full-sized and will go in my (literal) stockpile of facial cleansers. I keep accumulating more and more facial cleansers, I doubt I will ever have to buy another bottle in my life! I like Biore as a brand and will use this cleanser and I'm sure it will be average and work just fine. The sunscreen from Neutrogena will also easily be used up- it is a tiny sample if you intend on using it for your entire body, but it is the perfect size to keep in your purse for emergencies. The Wella Ocean Spritz hair spray sounds interesting and I will definitely experiment with it. I will once again note that we get a Wella product basically every month from Glossybox- they need to branch out and give us more variety in brands!! I know Luxebox sent out about a million samples of Olay Regenerist to subscribers, so for those of you who subscribe to Luxebox and Glossybox, you probably have enough little samples to equal a full sized bottle of this wrinkle cream by now? I will give this little guy to my mom :) The razor is always appreciated- I actually needed one and I hate spending money on razors, so I was very happy to receive this. The Biore Pore Strip will also be used up easily, although I find they don't work very well. My biggest annoyance with this box is definitely the horrendous Covergirl Flipstick! I have included multiple photographs to show you ladies this colour- it is not going to flatter me at all. In my beauty profile I asked for neutral and natural shades, and this is about as far from natural and neutral as it gets! It is an aggressive brown and gold that I didn't even bother to open and swatch because I just know it will not work for me. I hate to be a debbie downer, but I think it is pretty obvious that this is a colour that was selling terribly so Covergirl unloaded it onto Glossybox as a way to get rid of it. It seems like a poor excuse for a beauty sample and I can't be alone in feeling that way?

Overall, this wasn't a positive post. I am sorry for my complaints. This wasn't a terrible box by any means- I have seen much worse from the likes of Glymm in the past! However, Glossybox isn't living up to its promises- where are the luxury high-end samples? Where is the personalization? Oh, and for the love of God, could they please try shipping their boxes out earlier so we can actually receive our boxes in the same month that we've paid for them?

  1. The products look great, but like, you said, it's supposed to be high-end products. When I first looked at your post, I thought it was really funny because Glossybox has the really sophisticated, fancy packaging, and then you opened it up and it was Neutrogena and Covergirl :D Hopefully a more high-end month next month xoxo

    1. yes, the variety of products is great, and the fact that there were full-sized items was also really nice. I just think they really need to re-focus on what they branded themselves as. They're supposed to be 'high-end' and they're as far from it as they could be! The packaging is high-end and luxe though, I just love their boxes! but I am not paying $15.00/month for a high-end cardboard box ;) I would rather have a smaller sample of a high-end product to try than a big giant sample of a facial cleanser that I can get on sale at the drug store for $3.00.

  2. Great review! I think your post here outlines why I cancelled my Glossybox. It's not a bad box at all, but I didn't want to receive a lot of drugstore brands that I would usually buy on a trip to Shoppers. They do give out giant sized products, but I just didn't know if I needed those giant-sized drugstore products. The Wella looks intriguing though.

    1. Exactly! this months box came jam packed with stuff, and I am not angry over that. I would just rather have what they had promised, which is high-end samples. I don't need gigantic bottles of facial cleanser and full-sized everything- give me a smaller sample of a better quality item.

  3. I have seen a couple glossy posts so far and most people seem to be getting that lip duo..what's with that?! Honestly the colors are really un-flattering. I just saw those Covergirl duo sticks today at Pharamsave and their are some colors that are decent (Mostly bright reds and such) Sucks that they gave you one that's hardly wearable:( I totally understand you, that's exactly where my frustration came in with Luxe Box.. it was supposed to be "Deluxe" but I didn't feel it was every month.

    1. Yes, a few people I have seen got a nice light pink one, but that seems to be the minority. As I said, they probably had a bunch of this shade to unload, whereas other shades are selling well.

  4. I appreciate your honest review. It does stink that GlossyBox always ships SO late. I was considering cancelling my subscription since I just don't need any more random products..buuut...um..I love the box you got (not the CG duo stick though, that colour just sounds awful) and hope I get the same. I haven't received my box yet..but that's b/c I live in a condo with a tiny mail box!

    1. I am glad you like this box!! I sound negative in my review but I will use the majority of this stuff- it is just that my expectations and what I received were so far opposite of one another! They seem to be more drug store brand oriented, which is FINE, but then don't market yourself as luxury and high-end, and certainly don't charge more than all your competitors when they actually do provide high-end samples (like Topbox).

    2. That's very true. I see ladies from England, Japan, Australia get higher quality products then us Canadians. I think a large part of that is due to their lack of negotiation power perhaps? It feels like we tend to get the shaft a bit when it comes to products :(

  5. I agree with your comments about it not being high end products. On one hand I do like that if I like the products, that they aren't expensive to buy myself some other time. It would be exciting to try some products that are higher end that I can't afford to through money away on with out trying them first. I got the lighter pale, pale pale, pink colour. It is not a colour I would have picked, but it is wearable. I also got a different cleanser. Biore Warming blackhead remover cleanser, which will be great for the summer for removing all of the sunscreen, sweat and grease I get in the summer time. Keep up the great reviews! I tried posting this already, sorry if I double post.

  7. I just got the exact same Glossy Box as yours. Yes, a bit disappointed in the late shipping and the " lack of high end items". But at least I feel I could use all of them. The CoverGirl lip duo is interesting but I'm not too crazy about the color. How about you?

    1. I am not a fan of the Flipstick colour at all- and it isn't personalized to my likes/dislikes from my beauty profile which is disappointing. I agree with you in that I can use most of these samples (not the wrinkle cream or Flipstick) which is GREAT :) The razor especially came at just the right time!

  8. that is disappointing...that's one of the reason that kept me from ordering glossy box type of subscription. I hope your next box will be better

    1. I hope next month will be better too, but it seems like each month the samples are more drug store branded, and the boxes ship later. I hope they turn it around in July.

  9. hey! just opened my box like 2 seconds ago and thought the same thing - many drug store products but many of them are full sized. i am really excited about the Wella spray but you are right, i keep seeing the brand pop up everywhere! it's too bad your Cover Girl Flipstick is so dark!

  11. Glossy needs to step it up. We've all looked at the Euro GBs and been impressed. I know Canada is a much smaller market BUT the major Euro brands are all available here. Hell, even GB Australia is more interesting than ours.

    1. yes I really just wish they'd stay true to what they marketed themselves as- they've lost focus in that regard! the products, lovely as they may be, are not high-end nor luxurious !

  12. Glossybox is easily becoming one of my favourite beauty subscription services. I literally love everything in each box. I got the same products of you and found the l'oreal sample so hard to open.. I actually had to cut it. lmao

  13. Hi Steph!
I was super happy with my box. I honestly think I'm just super easy to please! lol. I know they promised more luxury brands..but I worry if they put a lot of just luxury stuff..we're going to get chintzy 1 time use samples of things like the $200+ cream in one of the other boxes! I totally get what you're saying and I understand why you signed up for the service, so I bummed for you. That said, some months have been really awesome! :) I still think Glossy has the best box. What do you think?

    1. I forgot to add, I got a nice colour of covergirl called whisper. I may have felt way more negative if I got the colour you did. It's not suitable for fair skin tones at all..Actually, like you said, I'm not sure if it's suitable for any skin tone. :o

    2. I think Topbox is the best box because they're cheaper, always ship on time, and provide REAL high-end samples in great sizes! I am always impressed with Topbox. I am not going to cancel my GB subscription yet, but if I keep getting all drugstore brands I will!

      Delete
  14. That's terrible! You got a pretty good box, but isn't the point up signing up to try out high-end brands so that you don't waste money on expensive products? Not to try out afforable products?

PS getting free razors make me happy too! they are too ridiculously expensive!

  15. You're not the only one who's annoyed at receiving your box late! I *still* haven't gotten mine. :( If I don't get my July box in July, I will definitely be cancelling my subscription...no matter how much I like the box they come in.

    1. Yes they're TERRIBLE with always shipping late and never telling subscribers what is going on or why. If it happened every once in a while, I wouldn't be so annoyed but this is happening every single month except for February!

  16. I hear you on the drugstore vs luxury brands. Have you seen what other people are getting in their Glossyboxes around the world? I feel like so far Canada gets the drugstore stuff, while Europe gets the high-end stuff. I wish I knew how it all worked, how samples are procured and such. I am scared of the lipstick too, but I think the colour might suit me although I still wouldn't wear it everyday. I think my review will be somewhat subdued as well.

    1. A couple of months back GB Australia got those lip covers with tweed and patterns on them. I have no idea of what they are called or how they work but they looked fun. Kinda like the prepatterned nail covers.

GB UK has had a Harrods box.

Japan alos gets some interesting stuff.

But you never hear complaints of quality just late delivery.

      Delete
    2. I saw that Harrods box! Wow! Talk about an amazing partnership! I've seen Japan as well, so I wonder what's going on with ours?

    3. YES the Euro boxes were the reason I was so excited to sign up for GB. Even the USA boxes are much nicer and have better brands.

  17. I totally agree with you the biggest turn off is the fact that box after box, most of their products are drug store brands. That covergirl lipstick is a hideous color. Judging by the fact that we're all getting that shade and not a shade that suit our personal profiles, it's probably the color that Covergirl couldn't sell. lol

    1. Exactly! I still enjoy the products I received and I will totally use them, its just that I signed up to try out samples of high-end products to see which were worth spending the cash on, not to try out drug store brands I can easily afford to buy on my own.

  19. On one hand there are tons of usable products that are decent sizes, on the other... they are very accessible products that you can get at anytime. I think the point of these sample boxes is to experience a bit of luxury on a budget and figure out those must have products you need in your arsenal.

  20. I like this box! Sometimes I see you post these Glossyboxes.. and makes me wanna sign up but this one would be kinda a let down for me. I HATE getting the Olay Regenerist product. If I get that in another Luxe box I'll probably freak! haha

  21. I agree as well with you on the box.. There is nothing high-end about these products. I received the same as you except my CG lip color is in the shade called Whisper.. It is actually not too bad of a color still not one that I would've picked. The hair spray looks interesting as you said but the rest.. I am not thrilled.

  25. We got the same box. While I agree it would be nice to get more high-end products (I'm still on the waitlist for my Topbox) one thing I can say about Glossybox is that I generally do have a use for 99% of the products, drug-store or not.

Sometimes I wonder if they're having a hard time securing partnerships with companies in Canada because they're one of the newer subscription boxes.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wow I agree with everything you said! Sure these products are useful but these are NOT luxury brands! My June Glossybox was a total fail and I've cancelled my subscription :(

  27. I received a very similar box and I have to say I was disappointed in the lip colour as well. The other products I appreciate but I can't pull off that colour.. especially with how fair my skin is. Oh well!

  28. This is the EXACT box I received for my first glossybox mail-out. I kept wondering why my box hadn't arrived when I was suppose to get it on the 28th, according to Canada Post.

I'll give them another chance (1 month). I recently switch from luxe to glossy and I'm not very impressed with either of them. Luxe box hands out a ton of samples you would normally get for free at a beauty counter, whilst Glossy promises high-end products and delivers drugstore items instead.

I'm happy about the cleanser because I don't need to go out and buy another lol, just trying to be positive.
